This year I volunteered for Hour of Code. I visited my older son’s classroom, and it was so rewarding to see all 25 first graders in the room deeply engaged in a coding activity. We talked about Computer Science, my job as a Software Engineer and the company I work for, watched some videos, and worked on “The Foos”, a really fun game/coding activity designed by Code Spark Academy for the Hour of Code. A few days earlier I had done the same with a group of fifth graders. It was a similar agenda, but we worked through the Minecraft Hour of Code activity instead, and they loved it.
When I was putting together the video materials I realized I could not possibly play the same video to both groups. I needed to find some videos that would get the message across more effectively to my first graders group. After a couple of hours of research I picked one of the inspirational videos from Hour of Code, and found some really really cool ones made by BBC Learning. The kids loved them, and I wanted to share the playlist here. Enjoy!
